Violet Bistro: a room designed for the evening

Why we chose dark walls for the Karaköy bistro, how we built the light, and how 46 people sit comfortably in 140 square metres.

Bistro interior with deep aubergine walls and violet velvet banquettes

The owner had one wish: “Let people forget it is evening here and linger over dinner.” Painting the walls deep aubergine was the first decision.

Light

We removed general ceiling lighting. Each table has a low pendant and the banquettes a hidden strip behind them. In this light the dark walls, brass and marble glow.

Seating

Curved banquettes along the walls increased capacity and gave every table a back, so 46 people sit comfortably in 140 square metres.
